Dean’s Scholars holds outreach events throughout the year to foster a sense of involvement in the greater Austin community. Click on the drop-down menus to learn more about a few of the volunteering and outreach opportunities DSers regularly participate in!

For several years now, Dean’s Scholars have been tutoring students at Gonzalo Garza Independence High School. The school is dedicated to helping students who have fallen behind or out-of-sequence in the normal path to high school graduation. As such, the students follow self-paced, individualized curricula that are tailored to meet each student’s needs. Each semester, Dean’s Scholars volunteer their time to work one-on-one to help students with math, science, or another subject. While they tutor, Dean’s Scholars build close relationships with their students that can really make a difference in the lives of both mentor and mentee.

Each year, Dean’s Scholars hosts the Distinguished Lecture Series, a campus-wide lecture featuring a leading scientific figure in the nation. In the past, we have featured Nobel Laureates, a National Medal of Science recipient, and a Pulitzer Prize winning author. All DSers have the opportunity to join the Distinguished Lecture Series Committee (DLSC) and help plan the event; this is an awesome opportunity to develop your leadership skills, work with fellow DSers, and interact with incredible scientists!

Dean’s Scholars hosts a booth for UT Austin’s annual Girl Day event, which strives to encourage K-8 students to learn more about STEM. DSers always find it really fulfilling to share their love for STEM to young students in this way!

It’s super chill, the teachers are helpful and nice, and my assigned student has become a great friend of mine as we tackle physics problems together every Monday morning. Overall, this is a wonderful way to contribute to the greater community while building your own teaching and communication skills.”
